It was always going to be a tough introduction to full sized pitches whether it's 35 min halves or 4 x 15 mins for these young U14s. The first game of the season was a trip to Chichester HC to play a group of much older and more experienced players who didn't know each other's names. It was important to ensure the squad was large to allow for subs to give the children the rest they needed. But the children remained strong and took defeat as something to build on. Another tough one was a trip to Bournemouth HC but this time their team knew each other well and played like a close knit team and the goals just kept coming or so it seemed. As the season went on and the training back at St Vincent intensified the wins came, both wins against Petersfield HC. The league was a large one with 10 teams and Gosport being scheduled 13 matches, unfortunately we weren't able to play all 13 due to other South Central Hockey scheduling but the team has grown enormously in ability and confidence. Coach Stu said he was incredibly proud of the group of girls and boys and their performance yesterday was like something taken from a training exercise (as recognised by Team Manager Clare) beating Petersfield 1-3 in a nail-biting 70 mins was fantastic with some strong moves in mid-field and accurate shots on goal won by clever play in the D. Well done Team and look forward to next season when you won't all be the smaller ones.
